The evolution of Twitching Tongues' has been interesting, to say the least. A constant in their career is that they have always been a group all about ingenuity and creativity.
This EP struck me as something really interesting and new. The record consists of really bluesy Life of Agony influenced metal and hardcore. The singer Colin Young is clearly still finding his footing in singing, but he's making a decent effort which suits the music.
The EP is a promising introduction to an interesting idea that features an excellent cover of Pentagram's "Forever My Queen."
Favorite Tracks:
Insane & Inhumane, Loveless Nightmare.
Sleep Therapy (2012)
This record beautifully builds upon the foundation established with Insane & Inhumane. The vocals are improving while still sounding unpolished which gives the music a more raw feeling.
Sonically it feels way bigger than Insane & Inhumane while staying true to their initial sound. Colin's voice singing "Sleep won't work no more" going into the title track is haunting. This record is a solid follow-up that would be pleasing to anybody who was already a fan.
Favorite Tracks:
I Fell From Grace Feet First, Sleep Therapy.
In Love There Is No Law (2013)
Twitching Tongues took inspiration from heavier bands when they wrote In Love There Is No Law. They dropped their guitar tuning to perfectly complement Colin's vocal ability. They even named the record using a play on Bolt Thrower's "In Battle There is No Law."
The band used a lot of haunting gothic melodies, even making an effort to diversify their sound by incorporating clean acoustic guitar parts. The lyrics exhibit Colin's overwhelming ability to pull on your emotions. The record is masterfully written, and with no filler, it is a modern masterpiece.
Favorite tracks:
Eyes Adjust, Deliver Us to Evil, Departure.
Eyes Adjust, Deliver Us to Evil, Departure.
Disharmony (2015)
The band's first release after signing to Metal Blade Records, and it is a perfect record for Metal Blade. Disharmony is creatively written, with riffs that would challenge any vocalist. Colin took that challenge in stride and delivered, his singing is beautiful & haunting.
Guitarist Taylor Young writes guitar-acrobat riffs. The advance in guitar playing only compliments the song structures. Each song punches you in the face and gut simultaneously.
The bridge riff in the title track is reminiscent of a mosh riff by NYHC band Merauder. Colin's lyrics resonate richly with heartache and pain, eliciting his signature emotional response.
Favorite Tracks:
Asylum Avenue, The End of Love, & Arrival.
Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred (2018)
This record is a beautifully driven masterpiece. Without a doubt, it is their best work lyrically and vocally. It is quite clear that Colin's voice has matured, especially when you hear the vocal melodies/harmonies on this record.
There are far more moments of Life of Agony influence present than on the previous 2 records. The inclusion of several epic ballads is another step in a different direction.
The song Long Gone feels like Twitching Tongues' attempt at writing a Meatloaf song. Gaining Purpose's track listing alternates between hard songs and soft songs in a very ADD fashion.
Twitching Tongues takes influence from bands like Fleetwood Mac, Meatloaf, Type O Negative, Candlemass, Life of Agony, Only Living Witness on this album. And it has been scrutinized by many longtime fans as a step in the wrong direction. But if one remembers to keep all of their influences in mind, this album is unmistakenly classic Twitching Tongues.
Favorite Tracks:
Kill For You, T.F.R, Gaining Purpose, Defection.
